Introduction

University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is under the leadership of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). As a national key university, we are recognized for our advanced science and high technology programs, unique management studies, and well-tailored disciplines in the humanities.
USTC offers 33 undergraduate programs in 12 subject areas, including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Life Science, Engineering Science, Electronic Information, Computer Science, Geophysics, Environmental Science, Economic Management and Nuclear Engineering.
The undergraduate programs at USTC are 4-year full-time study programs, and classes are mainly delivered in Chinese, with some taught in English or bilingually. Bachelor's degree and graduation certificate will be awarded when the student finish all the required course work and pass the thesis defense.

Application Guideline

1. Eligibility

1.1 Non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport, in good physical and mental health conditions, and a graduation certificate from senior high school. 1.2 Passing the new HSK Level 5 or above is a language requirement. Applicants whose native language is Chinese, or can provide proof of studying at a high school where classes are taught in Chinese, can apply for HSK test waiver.
1.3 Emigrants from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan who are applying as international students must have obtained their current foreign citizenship before April 30, 2016. In addition, applicants must have lived abroad for at least 2 years during the period between April 30, 2016 and April 30, 2021 (more than 9 months of residence abroad per year may be considered as one year)
1.4 The conditions set by the Document No. 12 (2020) of Ministry of Education of the PRC should be met.

2.1 Online application

2.1.1 Create your account on the online application system website.
2.1.2 Fill in all the information and upload the necessary documents as required.
Application materials required:
> Application Form for International Students (Undergraduate Program) (Attachment 2)
> Photocopy of passport (Including pages with Chinese visa or residence permit, if applicable)
> Notarized photocopies of senior high school graduation certificate and transcripts; applicants who will be graduating from senior high school before July 2021 should provide Pre-graduation Certificate issued by senior high school (Original senior high school graduation certificate and transcripts are required upon registration if admitted)
> Photocopies of Certificate of new HSK Level 5 and transcripts (Original certificate and transcripts are required upon registration if admitted); or a proof of studying at a high school where classes are taught in Chinese;
> Foreigner Physical Examination Form (Attachment 3)
> Recommendation letter from senior high school (Original copy in Chinese or English)
> Applicants under 18 by Sept. 1st, 2021 should submit a Guardian Statement (Attachment 4). The guardian of the applicant must stay in Hefei during the period of applicant’s studying at USTC, and it is the guardian’s responsibility to have a stable source of living.
> Emigrants from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan who are applying as international students should submit the following documents:①Immigration certificate;②Proof of cancellation of the original Chinese citizenship;③Photocopy of the passport pages with customs stamps (Exit and entry) from April 30, 2016 to March 15th, 2021;④Proof of living abroad from April 30, 2016 to March 15th, 2021(At least 2 years).
> In addition to the application materials above, USTC may require applicants to provide supplementary materials, and applicants should provide any upon request.

2.2 Entrance Examination & Interview

2.2.1 Entrance Examination

Applicants who passed the review of the application documents will be informed to participate in the university entrance examination, which covers the subjects of Chinese, Mathematics, and Science (Comprehensive test of Physics, Chemistry and Biology). The time and venue for the entrance examination will be notified later (Usually held in April or May).
Applicants who pass the review of the application documents and meet the following requirements can be exempted from taking the entrance examination:
Type of Certification SAT IB GCE A-Level ACT
Requirements SAT I ≥ 1300,and at least three SAT II subjects, including Math (level 2) (≥650) and two other subjects relevant to the program applied. IB certification obtained,and at least 3 HL and 3 SL subjects relevant to the program applied.
HL subjects must include Math ≥ 6,and a total score ≥ 35.
at least 3 A-level courses (minimum three Bs), including Math and two other courses relevant to the program applied. Courses studied must be relevant to the program applied,And an ACT score ≥ 27.

2.2.2 Interview

Applicants who passed the entrance examination or meet the examination waiver requirements are to attend an interview. Time, venue and method of the interview will be announced later.

3. Admission

The admission decision is based on a comprehensive evaluation of the applicant’s academic performance (Entrance examination or SAT/IB/GCE A-Level/ACT results), interview performance, qualifications, certificates and other related materials.
Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW202) will be sent out to the admitted applicants. The admitted applicants should take their ordinary passport, Admission Notice, Visa Application Form (JW202), and original Foreigner Physical Examination Form as well as other original documents of physical examination to a Chinese Embassy or Consulate in their home countries, and apply for student visa (X1 visa).
The admitted applicants must come to USTC for registration before or on the dates indicated on the Admission Notice with the aforementioned documents. The admitted applicants must enter China with ordinary passport and X1 visa.

4. Fees & Scholarships

4.1 Tuition fee: RMB 26,000 per academic year
4.2 Insurance fee: RMB 800 per academic year
4.3 Accommodation fee for on-campus dormitories varying from RMB 500--1,000 per month depending on the type and size of the room.
4.4 Excellent applicants may apply for USTC Fellowship, which covers tuition fee, insurance fee, monthly stipend of RMB 2,500, and fee for on-campus dormitory. Applicants can apply through the Online Application System. Please refer to the following link for details:

Official admission documents will be sent out after the applicants have been awarded the Chinese Government Scholarship. FAQ

1. If I am a Chinese citizen with permanent residence of a foreign country, am I eligible to apply?
A: Sorry, you are not eligible. Only non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport is eligible.
2. If I have already given up my Chinese citizenship and became a foreign citizen, may I apply for the undergraduate programs?
A: For those who have given up their Chinese citizenship and became foreign citizens, the conditions set by the Document No. 12 (2020) of Ministry of Education of the PRC should be met.
3. Is there any age requirement?
A: There is no age limitation, but for applicants who are under 18 (by September 1, 2021), they must provide a certificate identifying a legal guardian in China. The guardian of the applicant must stay in Hefei during the period of applicant’s studying at USTC, and it is the guardian’s responsibility to have a stable source of living.
4. Is there any requirement for the average scores of applicants in high school?
A: There is no requirement for the average scores of applicants in high school, but all applicants need to submit High school/University (if applicable) transcripts (in Chinese or English) and their scores in high school will be considered while USTC evaluate each applicant.
5. Is there any requirement for Chinese Language proficiency?
A: Chinese language proficiency of HSK Level 5 or above, with each subject scored over 60 points is required. Applicants whose native language is Chinese, or can provide proof of studying at a high school where classes are taught in Chinese, can apply for HSK test waiver.
6. Where can I check the HSK Test Centers?
A: HSK Test is held by Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC). The test centers are all over the world. Test takers can check the nearest test center at http://www.chinesetest.cn/ChangeLan.do?languge=en&t=1563436128335.
7. Is there any requirement for English language proficiency?
A: There is no requirement for English language proficiency. But for applicants whose native language is not English, they are required to provide some supporting documents of their English language proficiency, such as TOEFL/IELTS scores, or proof of studying at a high school where classes are taught in English.
8. What subjects are contained in the Entrance Examination?
A: The entrance examination covers the subjects of Chinese, Mathematics, and Science (Comprehensive test of Physics, Chemistry and Biology). The Chinese test is all in Chinese while the Mathematics and Science tests are both in Chinese and English.
9. How can I take the entrance examination? Will there be online test?
There will be both online and in-person exanimation and the detail information will be sent to applicants who pass the application review later via email.
10. When will the entrance examination be held?
A: The time and venue for the entrance examination will be notified later (usually held in April or May).
11. When will the interview be held? Is it online or in site?
A: The time and method for interview will be notified later (usually held in April or May). There will be both online and in-person interviews.
12. Is there any application fee?
A: No, there is no application fee.

15. Is it necessary to have graduation certificate of high school when I apply?
A: Certificate of expected graduation (the expected graduation time should be indicated) issued by the high school that will issue the diploma with (for applicants who will graduate from high school by August 2021) is needed. Also, the graduation certificate is required to be obtained before you register for semester.
16. Do the applicants need to provide the original documents? If so, when to provide them?
A: Yes, all the original copies of the documents provided in the Online Application System must be submitted before the integrative test/official registration. USTC will check all the documents. If any certificate provided proves to be fake, the integrative test/admission of the applicants will be terminated.
17. What is the study mode for international undergraduate students?
A: International undergraduate students will take classes with Chinese students.
18. Are there any kind of entrance tutorial class in USTC?
A: No, USTC does not hold any kind of entrance tutorial class in any form. USTC never holds or cooperates with any individual, company, or institution, to organize any form of profitable training activities related to application issues.
19. How to apply for visa and dormitory?
A: The formal Admission Notice and the entrance guidance documents (including the information about visa and dormitory) will be sent to the admitted applicants visa email.
20. Is there any scholarship for undergraduate applicants to apply?
A: Undergraduate applicants can apply for Chinese Government Scholarship or USTC Fellowship. USTC Fellowship Level A covers tuition fee, insurance fee, monthly stipend of RMB 2,500 and fee for on-campus dormitory. USTC Fellowship Level B covers tuition fee. A: Applicants can apply for Chinese Government Scholarship or USTC Fellowship.
For Chinese Government Scholarship, please refer to the official website of the Scholarship Council of China (Study Abroad in China: http://campuschina.org/);
For USTC fellowship, it can be applied via the International Student (Undergraduate) Application system of USTC. There is no need to create new account for applying USTC fellowship if applicants have finished their online application. Applicants need to choose the type of programs (self-financed or scholarship program) while applying in the application system.
